It’s finally time. The 19th Solheim Cup is ready to tee off. Will Team Europe keep their streak going for a fourth win in a row? Will Team USA be fueled by their patriotism to win on home soil just outside Washington D.C.? We’ll find out.
The pairings are coming in hot from the Media Center. We’ll update this article live each day and evening with the next set of pairings. We also have a golf match play FAQ that explains the formats you’ll see over the next three days.
One of the bigger themes this year around pairings is the use of data. While personality match is certainly a must, data has been driving the decisions. Both Solheim Cup captains leveraged analytics to begin the process of matching their players.
Team Europe Captain Suzann Pettersen says, “I don’t know if it was like this back when the Solheim first was played in ’91, but I think stats and kind of analytics is a much bigger part of it today, even [when] selecting the team.”
When asked how the Rose Zhang and Lauren Coughlin Foursome pairing came together for Day 1, Team USA Captain Stacy Lewis replied, “That one really came from the stats. That one came out of the computer, but I like the energy between the two of them. I like the energy with the caddies to kind of help them through. But that was really more of a stats one, and we just kind of made sure that the personalities and all that worked.”
It’ll be interesting to watch how some of the more data-driven pairings will perform over the coming days. It might be the competitive edge needed to defeat the other team’s equally matched depth.
