The fourth LPGA Tour major of the year begins this week at the Evian Resort Golf Club in Evian-les-Bains, France. Top players on the LPGA tour will compete with winners on the Ladies European Tour in Europe for the first time this season at the Amundi Evian Championship.
Last year’s champion, Ayaka Furue, will aim to defend her title this year after her win at the same course the previous year. She has 13 cuts made in 16 starts this year, with her best result (T2) coming at the HSBC Women’s World Championship. Although Furue has had a solid season, her performance in majors has been less so, with just one cut made in three starts this season.
World number one, Nelly Korda, is a familiar name on leaderboards on Sunday at majors this year, having finished in the top 20 in all three majors this year. Her best result was at the U.S. Women’s Open (T2). Korda has never won the Amundi Evian Championship.
A name to watch for LPGA fans is 21-year-old Lottie Woad from England. The world number one amateur ran away from the rest of the field in a dominant win at last week’s KPMG Women’s Irish Open. She is a sponsor’s invitation to the tournament. It should be a test for the amateur and fun to see how she performs against the best in the world in her second appearance at the tournament.
The golfer to beat this week is Jeeno Thitikul. She is currently first in the Road to CME Globe rankings and has one win and seven top-10s this season. Historically, the Amundi Evian Championship top performers excel in approach play and putting. With Thitikul in the top 15 for both of these categories, we expect her to have a strong showing.
Groups to follow (local time):
7:36am: Ruoning Yin, Charley Hull, Haeran Ryu
7:48am: Jeeno Thitikul, Lydia Ko, Brooke M. Henderson
8:00am: Minjee Lee, Mao Saigo, Maja Stark
12:48pm: Nelly Korda, Chisato Iwai, Celine Boutier
