Seigo entered the final round tied at the top with Haeran Ryu after three rounds of under-par golf. Seigo established herself as the favorite after Ryu took herself out of the competition with a brutal front nine 40. It took a birdie putt on the last hole for Seigo to sneak back into the lead after a near collapse on the back nine. After her win, she had this to say about her finish to the round.
“I was so laser-focused and nervous and really in the zone. All I could think of is the ball in front of me. I couldn’t see anything else,” she said.
The playoff was a stunner as three players missed birdie putts to set up Seigo’s three-footer for the win. Hyo Joo Kim, Ruoning Yin, Ariya Jutanugarn and Lindy Duncan joined her int the playoff. This victory is her first on the LPGA Tour and the 46th player to claim her first win in a major tournament.
Seigo will earn $1.2 million from the victory and is projected to jump into the top five in the Race to the CME Globe. Last year’s winner Nelly Korda ended up T14 for the week. The next major of the year will take place at the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills the weekend of May 29th.
