Lauren Coughlin and Andrew Novak won the Grant Thornton Invitational by three strokes over three other teams tied for second in an exciting final stretch on the last day.
The team of Coughlin/Novak had a one-shot lead over Charley Hull and Michael Brennan heading into the final round.

After the opening nine holes, Coughlin/Novak lost their lead after shooting a 3-under-33. Kupcho/Gotterup took a one-shot lead after shooting a 6-under-30.
The match really started heating up on the final five holes. Kupcho/Gotterup were at 24-under when Nelly Korda and Denny McCarthy birdied three straight holes to tie the leaders.
Coughlin/Novak joined the leaders at 24-under with a birdie on the 13th hole. They then surged up the leaderboard with back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes. Another birdie on the 17th hole gave them a two-shot lead heading to the 18th. Coughlin/Novak finished with a birdie to emphasize their three-shot victory.

The pair of Coughlin/Novak set the tournament scoring record at their 28-under-par score of 188. They carded a bogey free final round of 9-under-63. For Coughlin, this is her second start at this event while Novak was making his tournament debut. Novak has one career PGA Tour win at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, which is coincidentally also a team event. Coughlin has two career LPGA Tour wins and a Solheim Cup victory, but this paycheck of $500,000 is the largest of her career.

When Novak was asked about his playing partner Coughlin, he said, “Yeah, I had some pressure taken off of me I think coming down the stretch. Lauren’s probably the single most reliable golfer I’ve ever played with. I knew no matter what I was going to be hitting from the fairway. So I had a little rough patch off the tee in the middle, but kind of got it squared away on the back nine. Yeah, we were able to ring off some birdies.”

The next events on the PGA and LPGA Tours are their opening season events in the beginning of January. The PGA Tour kicks off their season in Hawaii at the Sony Open where Nick Taylor is the defending champion. The LPGA Tour starts their season in Florida at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions where A Lim Kim is the defending champion.
