Though Auburn started in second after yesterday’s round, they played in the morning and shot four times better than they did in Round 1. 4-under yesterday, 16-under today.
This gives Auburn a pretty wide berth – 8 strokes – heading into the third round and first cut. The top 15 teams and 9 individuals not on those teams will compete in the fourth round on Monday before there’s another cut to the top 8 teams going into match play.
Texas and Vanderbilt, both tied for second at 12-under, continued to mimic each other’s scores and jumped up for places. Luke Potter, a Longhorn senior, grew up down the road in Encinitas, CA, and gave us some tips on how to best spend our time here off the golf course.
Ten teams are in the red after today, with plenty of teams in and around the cutline for tomorrow. Three of the California schools – UCLA, Pepperdine and San Diego – are still within that project cutline for now, though San Diego’s Ian Maspat lost his No. 1 position on the leaderboard after a round of 74 (+2) today. San Diego is coincidentally tied with another California school in the field, Stanford. The last school from California – USC – is in 29th.
Individually, Filip Jakubcik of Arizona shot 6-under today to take the solo lead at 10-under. He was the only one to shoot 66, which is still the overall low round of the tournament. William Jennings of Alabama is two strokes behind and tied with another individual, Malan Potgieter of Louisiana, in second.
