Cameron Young defeated Mac Meissner by 6 shots to win the Wyndham Championship. This is Young’s first career win, though he’s finished runner-up seven times.
Young led Nico Echavarria by 5 shots after three rounds. His lead on Saturday got to as high as 8, but Echavarria made 5 birdies on the back nine to tighten the gap heading into the final round. Young’s rounds of 62 (-8), 63 (-9) and 65 (-5) gave him his first 54-hole lead/co-lead of his career.
Young stumbled out of the gate on Sunday with a bogey on the first hole but then birdied the next five holes. After the front nine, Young held an 8-shot lead over Echavarria and Meissner.
The leader faltered a bit on the final nine holes, following six straight pars with two bogeys and dropping to just 6 ahead. His par on the last hole, however, sealed his first PGA Tour victory in his 94th career start, making Young the 12th first-time winner on tour this season and the 1,000th unique winner in tour history. He ultimately won by 6 strokes at 22-under.
The top 70 in the FedExCup points list is now set. Only Chris Kirk was able to move into the top 70 after jumping up 12 spots thanks to his T5 finish in the Wyndham Championship. Meanwhile, Byeong Hun An dropped out of the top 70 after missing the cut.
The FedExCup playoffs start next week with the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where Hideki Matsuyama will look to defend his title against the top 70 players in the FedExCup points ranking.
