Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns etched their place into major championship history with rounds of 62 (-8) to tie the lowest round in a major. One of those players, Branden Grace, also accomplished this feat at Royal Birkdale during the 2017 Open Championship.

Herbert has never held a lead in a major championship after any round in his career. He is looking to join fellow Australians Peter Thomson and Ian Baker-Finch to win The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. The LIV golfer is appearing in his 18th career major with his best finish being T13 at the 2022 PGA Championship.

Burns moved up 101 spots on the leaderboard after his round of 62. Burns almost didn’t play this week because he and his wife Caroline were expecting a baby girl. His wife gave birth to their daughter earlier than expected and encouraged Burns to come play. He had this to say about his wife after his round. “She’s just amazing, a superhero. And if it wasn’t for that, I wouldn’t be here.”

The controversy of the day was Bryson DeChambeau receiving a two-stroke penalty after his round for improving his lie on the fifth hole. He moved from one stroke behind Hebert to three behind. If he goes on to win, he will become the first player to miss the cut in the previous three majors and win the last.

The two past champions at Royal Birkdale – Padraig Harrington (2008) and Jordan Spieth (2017) – both missed the cut. Matt Fitzpatrick, Wyndham Clark and Cameron Smith are former major champions that also missed the cut.

Round three tee times for the Open Championship start at 4:10am ET with Jack McDonald and Russell Henley in the first pairing.
