Hideki Matsuyama picked up his 11th PGA Tour win at the year’s opener, The Sentry. It was his second career win in Hawaii, his first coming in 2022 at the Sony Open.
Matsuyama had a one-shot lead over Collin Morikawa heading into the final round. Both Matsuyama and Morikawa shot matching rounds of 62 during the third round. Matsuyama finished the third round with 11 birdies whileMorikawa had 9 birdies and one eagle. Matsuyama at 27-under and Morikawa at 26-under separated themselves from the rest of the field after a record scoring day in Kampala.
“Collin played well and I just kind of followed him, so good day,” Matsuyama said after his third round.
Matsuyama extended his lead early in the final round with an eagle hole-out from 107 yards on the third hole. Along with the eagle, Matsuyama recorded three birdies and one bogey on the opening nine holes. At the turn, Matsuyama held a four-shot lead over Morikawa. The lead was down to two before Matsuyama made birdie on the 16th hole to extend his lead to three with two holes to play. With Matsuyama’s score of 35-under, he broke a PGA Tour scoring record.
Next week, the PGA Tour stays in Hawaii and heads to Honolulu. The Sony Open is the first full field event of the 2025 season. Next week will come with a lot of emotions as last year’s winner Grayson Murray is no longer with us to defend his title.
