Robert MacIntyre won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship for his fourth career win on the DP World Tour. He defeated his Ryder Cup teammate, Tyrrell Hatton, by four strokes to claim the victory.
This tournament is similar to the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on the PGA Tour. Each professional player is paired with an amateur, and the tournament is played on the three different golf courses. In this case, it’s the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie Golf Links and Kingsbarns Golf Links. The cut is after 54 holes, so each player can play all three courses; for the final round on Sunday, everyone was expected to play the Old Course at St Andrews. Heavy rain on Saturday shortened the tournament this year to 54 holes.
MacIntyre was tied with Richard Sterne at 12-under going into the final round on Sunday. MacIntyre played the Old Course on Sunday while Sterne had the more challenging Carnoustie Golf Links to play.
MacIntyre was consistent all week, shooting a 6-under 66 all three rounds on three different golf courses. Each day (Thursday, Friday and Sunday), MacIntyre made seven birdies to go with one bogey. On Sunday, he came out and shot four-under 32 on the front nine of the Old Course to take a commanding lead. Over on Carnoustie, Sterne shot an even-par 36 on the front nine to fall behind MacIntyre.
On the back nine, MacIntyre didn’t slow down, making three more birdies with his only bogey of the day coming on the 17th hole. Sterne played the back nine at Carnoustie 1-under to finish five shots behind MacIntyre for a T3 finish. Hatton was one of four players to shoot 7-under on the Old Course on Sunday afternoon; Hatton was previously T22 before jumping his way up the leaderboard for a solo second finish.
MacIntyre and Hatton were joined at this event by their fellow Ryder Cup winning teammates, Matt Fitzpatrick and Tommy Fleetwood. Fleetwood and Fitzpatrick both finished 9-under for a T22 finish.
Next week, the DP World Tour heads to Spain for the Open de Espana presented by Madrid. Spain’s Angel Hidalgo will look to defend his win at his national open against a field that includes the likes of Jon Rahm, Shane Lowry, Patrick Reed and Sergio Garcia.
