The Best Moments of the 2024 PGA Tour Season

The 2024 PGA Tour season officially came to an end at The RSM Classic. This season had quite the headlines from World Number One Scottie Scheffler getting arrested during the PGA Championship, to amateur Nick Dunlap winning or Rory McIlroy missing two short putts at the U.S Open to lose to Bryson Dechambeau. Let’s take a look at some of the most compelling things that happened in 2024.

Best Shot of the 2024 PGA Tour Season

The shot of the year came during the U.S Open via Bryson Dechambeau on the 72nd hole of the championship at Pinehurst. He was facing a 55-yard bunker shot and needed to get up and down for par to beat out Rory McIlroy. And he did, to four feet. He tapped in for par and his second U.S Open win, at a course where his idol Payne Stewart also won.

Best Putt of the 2024 PGA Tour Season

The putt of the year was not the longest or most difficult putt made all season long. But it was a putt that had more meaning than most others often do. Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre had two of the best moments of the season, winning his first PGA Tour title at the RBC Canadian Open with his dad caddying for him and then winning his National Open at The Renaissance Club. MacIntyre rolled in a putt from just over 20 feet on the 18th green to beat Adam Scott by one to claim the Genesis Scottish Open.

Best Tournament Finish of 2024

To find the best finish of 2024 we have to go back to Pinehurst, NC, and the 124th U.S Open Championship. Rory McIlroy was ahead of Dechambeau by two shots thanks to making four birdies in a five hole stretch. But a missed par putt from inside three feet, a bogey on the 16th hole and another missed short par putt on 18 left him one behind Dechambeau. Needing par to win his second U.S Open, Dechambeau hit the shot of the year out of the bunker to capture his second career major.

Best Round of Golf on the PGA Tour 2024

Before the RSM Classic, the best round of the year belonged to Xander Schauffele and his final round at Royal Troon to win his second major of the year. But enter Joel Dahmen who needed a low round on Sunday to keep his PGA Tour card for 2025. Dahmen delivered a closing round 64 – good enough to finish in spot 124 on the FedEx Cup points list.

Starting his Sunday round on the back nine, Dahmen shot 5-under for a score of 30 thanks to three birdies and a 110-yard eagle hole-out on hole 13. Stepping onto the ninth tee box, all Dahmen needed to do to secure his status for 2025 was not make a bogey. After coming up short on his birdie putt, Dahmen was left with a sixth foot par to determine if he would play on the PGA Tour next year. He made the putt for par and the fan favorite Dahmen will remain on the PGA Tour for next year.

Best Feel-good Moment of 2024

Nick Dunlap, a sophomore at Alabama, became the first amateur since 1991 to win a PGA Tour event. His win at the American Express earned him his PGA Tour membership and invites to the PGA Championship and the Masters. Dunlap beat fellow Alabama alum Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele by two strokes to claim his first PGA Tour win. The winning did not stop for the 20-year-old as later in the season, he would claim his second PGA Tour win at the Barracuda Championship.

Best PGA Tour Rookie of 2024

There are four players who will be in consideration for PGA Tour rookie of the year. Matthieu Pavon, Jake Knapp and Nick Dunlap all won during their rookie season on tour, though Max Greyserman is also in the running. Pavon played the best in the majors and finished 17th in the FedEx Cup points list. After winning the Farmers Insurance Open to become the first French player to win a PGA Tour event, Pavon finished third the next week. He also finished fifth at the U.S. Open and tied for 12th at the Masters.

Best PGA Tour Player of 2024

The race for the Jack Nicklaus award for PGA Tour player of the year seemed to be a one-man race for most of the season. But Xander Schauffele made it a conversation after winning his second major of the year at Royal Troon.

But this award has to go to Scottie Scheffler for the incredible year he had in 2024. In 19 starts this season he made 19 cuts – and in those he finished in the top ten 16 times. He won 7 times, which included his second Masters and Players Championship wins and four signature event wins; he also just secured his title at the Hero World Championship. Lastly, he claimed the Olympic Gold Medal in France and won his first FedEx title. Scheffler had a year most players dream about.
