Two teams are one step closer to achieving their dream of a national title.

Virginia continued their redemption tour this afternoon by beating Florida in match play. Two years ago, Florida had the honors, so it was only fitting that Virginia would continue their winning streak right into the final match.

This will potentially be Virginia’s first-ever national title.

Virginia will be meeting Oklahoma State on the big stage tomorrow. Oklahoma State went to extra holes with Ole Miss in two matches this afternoon.

This will potentially be Oklahoma State’s 12th NCAA title.

Both teams are hungry and have been pulling off incredible shots all week. Tomorrow will be a fun day!

Virginia’s Maxi Puregger took off in the Semifinals, going 1-up on hole three and ultimately parring hole 15 to win against Matthew Kress 4&3.

Virginia’s Josh Duangmanee was up next against Florida’s Jack Turner. After losing to Koivun earlier today, Duangmanee rallied and ultimately beat Turner 2-up on 18 with a birdie.

The last nail in the coffin was compliments of Virginia’s Ben James. His match with Luke Poulter had been close all afternoon, and they were tied heading into 18. James hit into the greenside bunker in two (hole 18 is a par 5) and almost holed out his sand shot, winning the hole, the match and advancing Virginia to the Finals.

Florida’s Ian Gilligan did not get to finish, but he was 1-up through 15 and Virginia’s Paul Chang also picked up his match while he was 1-up through 17.

Match 6 Recap: Oklahoma State defeats Ole Miss, 3-2

Ole Miss’ star of the week – and national champion – Michael La Sasso finally proved he’s human. After 5 hard-played rounds, La Sasso lost steam in his 6th round in the Semifinals. By the fourth hole, Oklahoma State’s Preston Stout took control and never let up. He ultimately won Oklahoma State their first point 5&4.

To counter the point, Kye Meeks of Ole Miss ran away with his match, winning 4&2 against Gaven Lane on hole 16.

The Rebels’ Tom Fischer – hero of the Quarterfinals match – came into the 18th hole tied with Ethan Fang. After Fang bogeyed to Fischer’s par, the Rebels just needed one more point to close out the match.

This is where the two remaining matches went to extra holes. The first tee time was Oklahoma State’s Filip Fahlberg-Johnsson vs. Ole Miss’ Cameron Tankersley. Fahlberg-Johnsson was up the entire match but missed a short putt on the 17th hole to close out the match and then lost to Tankersley’s birdie on 18 to go back to all square. The first extra hole went to 16, where they both double-bogeyed after hitting their shots into the water. On hole 17, Tankersley hit an incredible sand shot that almost gave the Rebels the birdie they needed, but it was Fahlberg-Johnsson who ended up making this putt this time around to close out the match 1-up on the 20th hole.

With the match points 2-2, the team advancing once again came down to the last match on the last hole. Oklahoma State’s Eric Lee and Ole Miss’ Cohen Trolio were astonishingly close the entire day and came in tied to 18. Trolio looked like he was in trouble after he had to take some relief from the cart path short right of the green. Lee had hit a pure wood to 6 feet for an eagle opportunity. With Lee missing the putt and Trolio making an impressive up and down, the pairing went to 16 for the extra hole.

Neck-in-neck, the two players hit their shots within feet of each other. Lee went first and blew his putt past the hole by about 6 or 7 feet. Trolio left his putt short and missed his par putt. Lee sunk his par putt, advancing the Cowboys to the Finals.
