The World Wide Technology Championship has been a PGA Tour event since 2007, the first to be played in Mexico. The tournament takes place on the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal golf course at the Diamante Cabo San Lucas resort.
Originally, this event was an opposite-field event played the same week as the WGC Match Play. In 2014, it became a primary event in the fall that now offers the winner full FedExCup points and an increased purse.
Viktor Hovland won back-to-back years in 2020-21 for his second and third career PGA Tour wins. Not long after, Erik van Rooyen set the tournament scoring record at 27-under when he won this event in 2023. Last year, Austin Eckroat picked up his second career PGA Tour win at the World Wide Technology Championship, defeating Justin Lower and Carson Young by one stroke.
About El Cardonal at Diamante Cabo San Lucas
El Cardonal golf course at Diamante Cabo San Lucas in Los Cabos, Mexico, plays just over 7,400 yards as a par 72. This course was the first completed course by Woods’ TGR design firm.
Having designed the course based on those he played while growing up in California, Woods had this to say about the golf course: “El Cardonal is going to remind people of the old-style California courses.” He wanted the golfers to have multiple shot options on each hole and to bring back golf strategy.
The course record during tournament play was set by Carson Young last year in the second round when he shot a 61.
Who to Watch at the 2025 World Wide Technology Championship
The field has three former major champions teeing it up this week: J.J. Spaun, Wyndham Clark and Franceso Molinari. Four previous winners of this tournament—Eckroat, van Rooyen, Matt Kuchar and Patton Kizzire—are in the field as well.
However, we predict Rico Hoey will win for his first tournament on the PGA Tour. In his last four starts, he has three top-10 finishes, including finishing runner-up last week. He ranks second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee-to-green and off-the-tee.
