Spain’s national open was first held in 1912, making it the third-oldest tournament in Europe. It then served as the founding event on the DP World Tour’s inaugural season in 1972. This year, it marks the 16th and final national open of the season. In last year’s tournament, Marco Penge defeated Dan Brown on the first playoff hole to earn his third win of the season.
The Open de España is the third-to-last event before the DP World Tour playoffs, contested by the 70 players in the Race to Dubai Rankings. This week’s champion will earn an invite to Augusta National, and the leading player not otherwise exempt will earn a spot at The Open through The Open Qualifying Series.
About Club de Campo Villa de Madrid
Club de Campo Villa de Madrid plays 7,154 yards as a par 71. The course record of 61 (-10) was set by Ross McGowan in 2021. This is the seventh consecutive year the Open de España has been played at this course.
The golf course will require the players to hit accurate tee shots, as the fairways are at an angle to their respective tees. The greens are sloped and tiered and protected by large, deep bunkers.
Who to Watch at the 2026 Open de España
David Puig, Eugenio Chacarra and Sergio Garcia are three of 20 Spaniards in the field. “It’s a week that I feel like every Spaniard has marked in our calendar, it’s an amazing week,” Chacarra said about playing in his national open. “It’s going to be fun, there will be all the Spanish fans.”
2025 European Ryder Cup members Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Tyrrell Hatton and Ludvig Åberg will also be teeing it up in Spain.
We predict Angel Hidalgo will win his national open for the second time. He won the Open de España here in 2024 by defeating Jon Rahm in a playoff. He has two top-5 finishes in his last four starts.
