Last year, the Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba was a welcome return to Mexico for the LPGA Tour, which hasn’t hosted an event there since 2017.

Mexico has a rich history of LPGA Tour play, from the Lorena Ochoa Invitational and Match Play events to the Corona/Tres Marias Championship to the MasterCard Classic Honoring Alejo Peralta to the Bing Crosby International Classic in the 1970s.

Last year, Chisato “Chizzy” Iwai made history here as the first winner of this event. She will be in the field defending her title this week.

About El Camaleon Golf Course

El Camaleon Golf Course at Mayakoba is a Greg Norman design that opened in 2006. It will be playing 6,583 yards this week as a par 72.

El Camaleon has hosted two professional men’s events: the World Wide Technology Championship on the PGA Tour (2007-2022) and LIV Golf Mayakoba (2023-2024).

Who to Watch at the 2026 Mexico Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba

World No. 20 Chizzy Iwai will be defending her title this week. “I hope to win this week, too, but golf is not easy,” said Iwai. “Yeah, that’s why I try myself, I keep focus my mental. This week also I just trying shot by shot.”

Iwai will be playing against recent major champion and World No. 1 Nelly Korda – her first start at this event – and a host of Mexican players:

  • Maria Balcazar
  • Maria Fassi
  • Isabella Fierro
  • Ana Jimenez
  • Alejandra Llaneza
  • Gaby Lopez (World No. 27)
  • Andrea Ostos
  • Clarisa Temelo (a)
  • Carolina Rotzinger

Lopez, a three-time LPGA Tour winner, is excited to host another event in her home country. “I think playing in Mexico is the biggest blessing,” she said. “It’s a huge responsibility trying to give back to the community and the girls around. But, yeah, I’m super excited to have the honor to kind of share this food, my country, my community with all the LPGA girls out here.”

We will also see 2026 Augusta National Women’s Amateur (ANWA) Champion Maria Jose Marin in the field as a sponsor invite. As the 2025 NCAA Individual Champion and the Women’s Amateur Latin America (WALA) Champion, Marin has built quite a resume for herself this last year.

“It’s always really fun getting to play on the LPGA. I think it’s a privilege to get a sponsor’s exemption into the week. I think just getting an invite into any event, yeah, as I said, it is a privilege. Every amateur dreams of it,” said Marin.

“After ANWA just my life took a huge, huge turn, for the good. More people have recognized me. There has been a lot of congratulations coming from all over the world and especially from my country, Colombia, and also from Mexico and the university.”
