Top-seeded Los Angeles bids the TGL goodbye after losing to the NYGC during the semifinals on Monday night in Palm Beach, Florida. During the inaugural TGL playoffs, NYGC won 6-4 to proceed to the best-of-three championship series next week.
Both teams were even on the first seven holes, but a 4-foot birdie putt from Xander Schauffele put New York one step ahead. He then beat Collin Morikawa at the 10th (par 5) and 13th hole (par 4). Trying to double the points, Schauffele threw the hammer, but the LA team declined it and ultimately conceded one point.
Rickie Fowler also scored a point for the NYGC after defeating Tommy Fleetwood on the par-4 11th hole.
During the singles matches, Fleetwood had a clear chance to keep LAGC in the TGL competition. However, his five-foot putt lipped out, giving Fowler the win. This defeat saw Sahith Theegala, Morikawa and Justin Rose’s first season come to an end.
“I think we’re all pretty happy. We thought it was possible, but knew it was going to be a long road. We’re definitely happy to be here,” said Schauffele after the win.
Los Angeles hasn’t lost any match in regulation since the start of the year. However, they once lost during overtime to Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links in early January.
“I think we played really nicely, and we had our chances, but just one or two putts that very easily could have gone in just lipped out for us, and that was kind of the deciding factor,” said LAGC’s Theegala.
New York will face the team that wins tonight’s playoff, where the Atlanta Drive GC battles it out against The Bay Golf Club.
