It seemed like game three was likely as the TGL championship’s second match came down the stretch between Atlanta Drive GC and New York Golf Club. However, all it took was some pressure from the trio of Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Billy Horschel to lead them to the first SoFi Cup.

It was an even first few holes as neither team could capitalize on putts. That was until hole 7, where Xander Schauffele drew a beautiful 9-iron into the back left pin location to set up a birdie putt. New York would claim another point on the next hole from Atlanta declining the hammer. Schauffele would win New York their final point on the 10th hole, winning the hole against Justin Thomas.

Atlanta turned up the heat with points won on holes 13 and 14 after New York declined both hammers. It all came together for Atlanta on the 15th hole with a hammer after Horschel hit the green and Rickie Fowler had a difficult short-sided bunker shot. Horschel stepped up and sank the electric 17-foot putt for birdie to ultimately win the match for Atlanta.

“I hit the spot, it looked good. Two feet out I knew it was in the hole and I blacked out,” Horschel said on his celebration. “I think I said some expletives. I think I said something about this being my house. It was a lot of fun.”

It was a gritty and brilliant performance by Atlanta, who will be remembered as the champions of the inaugural TGL season. The players will turn their focus to the PGA Tour, where they will prepare for the Masters starting April 10th.
