Ryan Fox defeated Sam Burns on the fourth playoff hole to win the RBC Canadian Open. This is Fox’s second career win, both done in his last four starts this season. We last saw Fox in the winner’s circle at the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic.
Fox and Matteo Manassero were tied at 14-under par after three rounds of play. They held a one-shot lead over a trio of golfers heading into the final round. Both leaders shot six-under par 64s to take the lead in Toronto.
Burns shot a 62 (-8) to take the clubhouse lead at 18-under par. He birdied the first five holes of the back nine to vault into contention and the 18th hole to secure his spot atop the leaderboard. Fox birdied three of his five last holes, including a clutch 16-foot birdie putt to tie Burns and force a playoff.
On the first playoff hole, Burns had the advantage by finding the fairway while Fox was in the fairway bunker. Fox just missed his birdie putt d while Burns missed a 6-foot birdie putt, leading to another playoff hole.
The second playoff hole saw both players with birdie putt opportunities. Burns went first and missed his 15-foot putt, and Fox did the same. The ground crew then changed the hole location for the third playoff hole.
The third playoff hole played much like the second but with both players making pars instead.. On the fourth playoff hole, both players hit the fairway and green in regulation. Fox hit his second shot to just under 15 feet while Burns’ second shot found the green but left him more than 50 feet for eagle. Burns three-putted for par while Fox tapped in his putt for birdie and his second PGA Tour win.
Next week, the third major of the year commences in Pittsburgh at Oakmont Country Club. Last year’s winner Bryson DeChambeau will look to defend his title and win his third career U.S Open Championship.
